From Dracula to Romania and the Formation of Modern Eastern Europe

Steve Randal, professor emeritus, will talk about how the feudal personality of Dracula’s was followed by the rise of nationalism, ethnic tensions and the clash of empires: German, Austro-Hungarian, Russian, and Ottoman. The focus will be on what UMass anthropologists discovered in Romania before the collapse of the Soviet system.
