9. Dumpster Permits

Dumpster Permit $25 per Dumpster

General Information:

In the Town of Hadley, any temporary-use dumpster larger than 6 cubic yards shall require a permit from the Head of the Fire Department, in accordance with the provisions of M.G.L. Chapter 148 – Fire Prevention Laws, Section 10-A, Massachusetts Comprehensive Fire Prevention Code 527 CMR 1.00 and referenced NFPA 1-2021 Chapter 1.12 and Chapter 19 with Massachusetts’ amendments.

  • The permit is required to be obtained by the property or building owner, lessee, or refuse generator BEFORE the dumpster(s) are placed on any property.
  • Please apply a minimum of 2 weeks before you need the permit.
  • Permits are not required for dumpsters which are delivered to a location and removed in the course of a single business day. 
  • FEE =  $25 per dumpster.
  • Last-minute requests are not accepted.

  • Use fillable PDF form below, fill it out and sign it
  • Email the form and your receipt to: fireadmin@hadleyma.gov
  • Once approved, we will email you back a signed permit.
  • $25 fee is per dumpster.

Must submit completed form and receipt, then receive the signed approved permit from the Fire Chief BEFORE delivery of the dumpster.

• Anyone who pays less than the required fees for multiple dumpsters per project or location, will have their application paused until all fees are received in our office.


Locations/Requirements:

All temporary-use dumpsters in the Town of Hadley are subject to inspection by the Fire Department to confirm compliance with the following:

  1. Dumpster permit must be posted on site; see permit for details.
  2. Dumpsters are not allowed on public ways.
  3. Dumpsters shall not be placed within 10 feet of a any structure or building.
  4. Dumpsters shall not be placed within 20 feet of an intersection.
  5. Dumpsters shall not be placed within 10 feet of a fire hydrant.
  6. Dumpsters shall not be placed in such a manner to obstruct vehicular traffic.
  7. Dumpsters shall not be placed in such a manner to impede or obstruct Fire Department or EMS Apparatus during a fire or other emergency.
  8. Dumpsters shall not be placed in such a manner that it will interfere with ingress or egress from a structure.
  9. Dumpsters shall not be placed under fire escapes.
  10. Dumpsters shall have the name and telephone number of the company or person from which emergency service to expedite movement of the container can be obtained.
  11. Dumpsters shall not be stored in buildings or placed within 10ft of combustible walls, openings, or combustible overhangs.
  12. Dumpsters adjacent to buildings shall not be placed so that the top of the container is less than five (5) feet vertically and horizontally below any window.
  13. Dumpsters are allowed for a maximum of 45 days. This 45-day period may be extended at the discretion of the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). 
  14. Each dumpster must be located on the property as to not interfere with the safety, convenience, or health of abutters or residents. 
  15. Dumpsters are not to be used for the purpose of a “transfer station” for businesses. 
  16. Each dumpster must be maintained and kept free of scattered debris, overflowing, and other nuisances. 
  17. Dumpsters shall be emptied when full.
  18. Containers which require mechanical assistance to move shall be provided with a means of access to the interior, without disconnecting from a compactor unit or they shall have a minimum port opening of two (2) inches in diameter through which water may be introduced for extinguishing fire. The opening shall be labeled in accordance with 527 CMR 34.05:(2).
