ADVENTURE IN ADVENTURE OUT WITH HADLEY PARK AND REC.
SUMMER 2011
CONNECTICUT RIVER PADDLE ADVENTURE – CLAY HARVEST
This program promises to bring a thrill to any child as we combine the excitement of a water adventure with the fun of art through clay! We will begin with a simple lesson, where kids will learn the basics of paddling and boat safety. From there we’ll put our newly acquired skills to work as we paddle canoes and kayaks out to a hidden deposit of clay along the Connecticut River and craft sculptures and pottery. Kids will also discover how the clay arrived here in the Connecticut River Valley, and about others who have come to harvest the clay over thousands of years.
Date/Time: Thurs, July 14 – 8:30am – 4:00pm
Location: Sunderland Boat Launch (located at the end of School St.)
Ages: 10 – 13
Cost: $55
CONNECTICUT RIVER PADDLE ADVENTURE – GPS TREASURE HUNT
Legend tells of Captain Kid and his band of pirates who traveled up the Connecticut River to hide away their stash of gold on an island. Now it is your kids’ turn to have a day of swashbuckling adventures as they set out on the high seas of the Connecticut River in search of buried island treasure. After a lesson in paddling basics and safety, we’ll paddle in kayaks and canoes to a nearby river island where kids will embark on their own high-tech scavenger hunt using handheld GPS units and clues to uncover the different pieces that will lead to a buried pirate treasure. This will be a day of nonstop fun, and, of course, plenty of time to make a splash in the water!
Date/Time: Thurs, July 21 – 8:30am – 4:00pm
Location: Sunderland Boat Launch (located at the end of School St.)
Ages: 10 – 13
Cost: $55
HUCK FINN RAFT BUILDING
This day is all about letting your child use their hands to create their own means for exploring the outdoors. To start, groups will be given pre-cut 2x4 planks and instructions for building a raft platform on top of two canoes. Once completed, kids will be able to take to the water with a group of six on their raft. From here we’ll make our way out on the Connecticut and where kids will enjoy a beautiful summer’s day on the water from their newly constructed watercraft!
Date/Time: Thurs, July 28 – 8:30am – 4:00pm
Location: Sunderland Boat Launch (located at the end of School St.)
Ages: 10 – 13
Cost: $55
CONNECTICUT RIVER PADDLE ADVENTURE – TRACK CASTING
Your child isn’t the only one who loves to run down to the water during the summer. Animals all around are drawn to the banks of the Connecticut River for a drink, for food, and perhaps even for a swim to cool off! On this trip your child will begin with a lesson in paddling basics and safety. From here we will paddle out onto the Connecticut in search of animal tracks along the river banks. Whether it is fox, mink, raccoon or beaver, your child will be thrilled to take a peak into the secret life of these animals as we unravel the mystery of their behaviors through the clues left behind. And the best part – they can take home a piece of the discovery when they make a Plaster of Paris cast of the track they find!
Date/Time: Thurs, August 4 – 8:30am – 4:00pm
Location: Elwell Recreation Area, Northampton (Intersection of Damon Rd. and Route 9)
Ages: 10 – 13
Cost: $55
CONNECTICUT RIVER PADDLE ADVENTURE – ULTIMATE CAPTURE THE FLAG
Your child will love this day of adventure combining river paddling with the ultimate version of capture the flag. After a lesson in paddling basics and safety, we’ll put our newly acquired skills to work as we paddle out to an island on the Connecticut River. Here kids will turn the island into their own tactical field as they embark in a game of ultimate capture the flag, a spin on the traditional game that includes walkie-talkies, flag football belts and pirate flags, puzzles, riddles and group challenges! This will be a day of nonstop fun, and, of course, plenty of time to make a splash in the water!
Date/Time: Thurs, August 11 – 8:30am – 4:00pm
Location: Sunderland Boat Launch (located at the end of School St.)
Ages: 10 – 13
Cost: $55
CONNECTICUT RIVER PADDLE ADVENTURE – WALKING STICKS CARVING
On this trip your child will explore one of the hidden gems of the Pioneer Valley as they journey through a secluded area rich in animal activity. We will start the day carving our own walking sticks to aid us on our journey. Then your child will receive a lesson in paddling basics and safety, and then it is off to the water in our fleet of kayaks and canoes! Exploring the Oxbow of the Connecticut River we’ll see the nesting sites of the Great Blue Heron as we paddle by. We’ll also get a chance to roam the river banks and see the tracks left behind by many of our four legged friends who came to the river’s edge for food and water!
Date/Time: Thurs, August 18 – 8:30am – 4:00pm
Location: Easthampton Boat Launch (Exit 18 on I-91 then two miles south on Route 5. On right.)
